NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
The next installment of Bernard Cornwell’s bestselling series chronicling the epic saga of the making of England, "like Game of Thrones, but real" (Observer, London)—the basis for The Last Kingdom, the hit television series coming to Netflix in Fall 2016.
From the day it was stolen from me I had dreamed of recapturing Bebbanburg. The great fort was built on a rock that was almost an island, it was massive, it could only be approached on land by a single narrow track—and it was mine.
Britain is in a state of uneasy peace. Northumbria’s Viking ruler, Sigtryggr, and Mercia’s Saxon Queen Aethelflaed have agreed a truce. And so England’s greatest warrior, Uhtred of Bebbanburg, at last has the chance to take back the home his traitorous uncle stole from him so many years ago—and which his scheming cousin still occupies.
But fate is inexorable and the enemies Uhtred has made and the oaths he has sworn combine to distract him from his dream of recapturing Bebbanburg.New enemies enter into the fight for England’s kingdoms: the redoubtable Constantin of Scotland seizes an opportunity for conquest and leads his armies south.Britain’s precarious peace threatens to turn into a war of annihilation.
But Uhtred is determined that nothing, neither the new enemies nor the old foes who combine against him, will keep him from his birth right. He is the Lord of Bebbanburg, but he will need all the skills he has learned in a lifetime of war to make his dream come true. The latest chapter in Bernard Cornwell’s "violent, absorbing historical saga," The Flame Bearer confirms Bernard Cornwell’s title as "perhaps the greatest writer of historical adventure novels today" (Washington Post).

Review
“Another rollicking Saxon tale.... No lit-fic pretensions here: historical fiction rendered, with little expansion, via battles and royal intrigue and portraits of day-to-day life circa 1000 B.C.E.” (Kirkus)
“Vivid, fast-paced.... Treachery and trickery mark the tenth volume in Cornwell’s always exciting Saxon Tales.” (Library Journal)
“Rousing...will not disappoint.” (Margaret Flanagan, Booklist)
“The final battle is one for the ages, bursting with gory detail and flush with savage death as the wolves of the shield wall smite his enemies.” (Lee Scott, Florida Times-Union)
“As with all his previous books Cornwell grabs your attention right off the bat. His masterful style pulls you right in.” (New York Journal of Books)
“Fascinating.... Blends historic fact with fiction seamlessly.” (Glen Seeber, The Oklahoman)
“The battle description might well be Cornwell’s best yet, which is saying something. Fans do not want to miss this episode.” (Bookloons.com)
“Bernard Cornwell ranks as the current alpha male of testosterone-enriched historical fiction…. Cornwell offers dramatic battle scenes with big swinging swords. There is also treachery, male bonding, plenty of historical nuggets and a skillful examination of the powerful role played by religion in the Dark Ages.” (USA Today)
“The most prolific and successful historical novelist in the world today.... Mr. Cornwell writes as if he has been to ninth-century Wessex and back. . . . Much has changed since the ninth century, but some things, and some feelings, are timeless.” (Wall Street Journal)
“Our hero is Uhtred, a good-hearted lout with a pleasantly sour disposition; he’s like a 9th century Han Solo.” (Time)

No surprises here - Great writing, great plot, great story - I highly recommend it
By Kevin
Cornwell didn’t surprise me with the quality of the writing, unpredictability of the plot or the depth of the characters. One of my favorite things about Cornwell’s handling of this story is how all of the action is in the present but it is being told as a memory of an old man so he can drop hints about what’s to come. How clever. I love a good story and I certainly love a great historical, action adventure. I mostly love the story though. This story doesn't have as much fighting action throughout it as the previous stories but it is filled with intrigue and plots. I love that too. I’m also impressed with how Cornwell conveys Uhtred’s inner thoughts on war, fear, necessity and readiness and how perspective changes with age along with his pragmatism over the subject. It is a beautifully written, human story. I have a feeling that people who do spectacular deeds think similarly to the way Uhtred is depicted in thought and Cornwell does such a spectacular job of conveying that thought in such frank human terms that it reminds me why he is one of my favorite authors. I am also impressed with the amount of conniving and deception of other characters and the reader that Cornwell so skillfully pulled off. This story has an intricate and complicated but completely believable plot which completely suspended my disbelief and absorbed me in the story as I read. This is a great book and is hours of cheap (okay, inexpensive) entertainment. I highly recommend this as the best in the series so far.

Ready for book 11
By Kindle Customer
I can't get enough of this book series. I started reading the Last Kingdom when the tv season one ended. Now I have finished all ten books. It's like eating potato chips, you just aren't satisfied 'til you have devoured them all. It has been over a year since season one ended and I am still waiting for season two of the tv series. I am seventy years old now, I hope I am not dead by the time season two gets to tv. The books are so well crafted and enjoyable. I do feel as though I am transported back to the time period and living in the midst of all the action as I read. If I ever have to defend my castle, I think I have learned well what I must do. I am anxiously awaiting book11. I will start on some of Bernard Cornwell's other book series as I wait.

Uhtred rides again and again and again
By avidreader
You can't say this book is full of surprises because if you've read any of the other Saxon tales you know that all Cornwell plots are surprises. He is a master at taking advantage of the lack of communications in Saxon England (sorry, Anglalond) to surprise his characters, so the reader gets it, as it were, on the rebound. And the suspense is genuine but then, it's been going on since Uhtred was about eight and he is now (I think) in his forties, and hopefully will continue into his eighties. so the suspense is sort of , eh, not suspenseful. Uhtred is of course a monomaniac but the rest ot the cast is pretty varied. The prose is quite simply delightful Uhtred's narrative voice never wanders away from the basis of his character but still manages to give great variety to his storytelling. This is a series you can re-read each time a new book is added and enjoy the whole sweep as well as the individual stories.
