With anxiety at epidemic levels among our children, Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents offers a contrarian yet effective approach to help children and teens push through their fears, worries, and phobias to ultimately become more resilient, independent, and happy.
How do you manage a child who gets stomachaches every school morning, who refuses after-school activities, or who is trapped in the bathroom with compulsive washing? Children like these put a palpable strain on frustrated, helpless parents and teachers. And there is no escaping the problem: One in every five kids suffers from a diagnosable anxiety disorder.
Unfortunately, when parents or professionals offer help in traditional ways, they unknowingly reinforce a child's worry and avoidance. From their success with hundreds of organizations, schools, and families, Reid Wilson, PhD, and Lynn Lyons, LICSW, share their unconventional approach of stepping into uncertainty in a way that is currently unfamiliar but infinitely successful. Using current research and contemporary examples, the book exposes the most common anxiety-enhancing patterns―including reassurance, accommodation, avoidance, and poor problem solving―and offers a concrete plan with 7 key principles that foster change. And, since new research reveals how anxious parents typically make for anxious children, the book offers exercises and techniques to change both the children's and the parental patterns of thinking and behaving.
This book challenges our basic instincts about how to help fearful kids and will serve as the antidote for an anxious nation of kids and their parents.

Best Resource for Anxious Parents with Anxious Kids!
By T. Richards
The beginning of this year I was afflicted with panic attacks. ADD and Clinical Depression afflict me; I believed anxiety did not. I have discovered over the last year that I am a very anxious person. To the point where it causes me to make decisions I wouldn't otherwise make. I shared about my experience and started reading about anxiety.
As we traveled this year I realized that my youngest daughter exhibits some of my mannerisms. Especially if she is scared, tired, stressed or uncomfortable. That set me into a panic mode. (There's that anxiety again!) Did I pass on this horrific gene to her...or have I done something to contribute to her issues? I think as a momma, I beat up myself more than I should.
So, when I'm unsure about things, I read. As much as I can. This last month I've been reading Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents: 7 Ways to Stop the Worry Cycle and Raise Courageous and Independent Children. Written by Dr. Reid Wilson and Lynn Lyons, LICSW, published by HCI). It is schedule for release on September 3, 2013.
This book helps parents learn how to deal with kids who seem to get a stomach-ache every morning. The child who clings to her mom whenever they leave the house. The child compulsively washing hands, arranging the closets or checking windows. Anxiety stops children from leaving independent and productive lives. The 7 steps in this book will change lives.
In this book parents learn how to:
Identify anxiety and take action;
Avoid using "avoidance" to handle worry and anxiety;
Identify stressors that may be a contributing factor;
Model flexibility;
Create a plan of action;
Expect worry;
Externalize worry;
Accept worry;
Help children deal with the fight-or-flight response;
Calm down;
Strive toward a goal;
Build on past successes;
and take action on the plan!
Each chapter provides parents with an opportunity to "take action". This section summarizes key concepts introduced in the chapter. This is followed by a series of actions or questions for the parent to explore and model.
The ultimate goal is to move the parent and child toward courage and independence. Independent children face problems with confidence; they have problem-solving abilities to conquer whatever they face. They find areas of mastery providing them with confidence, security and strength. Parents provide the best chance for their children to obtain this goal. By simple modeling.
I REALLY recommend any family dealing with worry or anxiety to read this book. The tools are valuable and easy-to-use. It just may change your life!

A Practical Approach---at last.
By Oliver Bjorksten, MD
"Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents" presents an easy-to-read, down-to earth approach for dealing with a variety of anxiety syndromes in children. Not only does it "build" the treatment piece by piece, but it also utilizes a "systems" approach in which the role of everyone in the family, both as part of the problem and part of the solution, is described. Each element of the treatment is thoroughly discussed with practical examples. Self-perpetuating interactions in which "the solution is the problem" which maintain anxiety are described and addressed. Most importantly, the authors prescribe specific practices to address each element of the problems and solutions. I highly recommend "Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents."

Very Helpful
By Krista
I bought this book after experiencing too much anxiety from my two toddlers, ages 1 and 2, regarding bugs, new people, and water/swimming. Neither are to the point of having a real problem but I want to nip this anxiety in the bud before we do have problems.
This book is structured toward older children (or adults) who do have real problems but the principles are incredibly helpful for anyone who experiences worry and anxiety. The most helpful principles I've learned is to expect worry and that it's normal in certain situations so condemning someone who feels anxious is very unhelpful. Less anxious people are not free from everyday worries but they know how to talk to their worry, so that's what an anxious person just needs to learn as well. I've also learned that worry pushes for avoidance and inaction so I am on high alert for those types of reactions in both myself and my kids.
I have responded much better toward my own worries after reading this book and am less surprised/upset when my kids express worry because I'm learning to manage/work with worry rather than eradicate it or hope it just disappears. I'm thankful to have found this book while my kids are still so young.
