It's good as far as textbooks go. It almost reads like a novel, which is really the only way I can get myself to read a textbook. It also focuses a lot on concepts, rather than strictly people and places (they're in there, too), which is nice.

To the toilsome count of one, two, three, a boy commits an absurd crime and never grasps just how bad he has been. After Tom finds a can of red paint under the kitchen sink, "It took him three seconds to decide what to do with it. One. Two. Three. 'Got it!' " It takes him three hours to paint the entire living roomAfurniture and cat included. A trio of computer-enhanced spreads, rendered in thick black lines and uniform colors and patterns, details the smiling boy's calm, step-by-step progress; through a window, his unsuspecting mother can be seen in the yard outside. Once the deed is discovered, Sharratt (Animal Orchestra) and Tucker abruptly shift from simple statements to a flood of words. Repetitive images show Tom's mother in various stages of horror (never mind that she left the boy unattended for three hours). Afterward, Tom describes the three weeks required to undo the mess. The conclusion, three years later, finds Tom under the sink again, admiring a can of blue paint. (His mother apparently hasn't rethought her paint-storage procedure.) Unlike Molly Bang's recent When Sophie Gets AngryAReally, Really Angry , there is no therapeutic message and no satisfying resolution. Tom's unsettling behavior comes out of nowhere and remains unquestioned. Ages 3-7. (Jan.)

PreSchool-Grade 2-Tom finds a can of red paint and proceeds to color the entire living room-furniture, cat, and all-while his mother is busy in the yard. The time it takes for each stage of his project is stated in the text. "It took him three seconds to decide what to do with [the paint]-." After his mother finds the mess, the three weeks it takes to rectify it is accounted for in entertaining detail. As the boy and his mother get rid of ruined furnishings and shop, prep, repaint, and paper, the format of the pages changes. The first part of the story is done in full-color, double-page spreads with few words in large print. The cleanup is recounted on three denser pages of text in smaller print with colorful spot art scattered throughout, rebus-style. Three weeks later, a vibrant double-page spread shows the newly carpeted, furnished, and wallpapered room in all its glory. Frequent, comical cartoon bubbles add humor to the story. On the last page, three years later, Tom finds another can of paint-. A fresh and original look at the passage of time.

Both the devilry of Tom and the clever inclusion of the consequences of his act invest this story with real charm and make the attending lesson in time most palatable. Tom, who has a head shaped like a paintbrush, discovers a can of red paint under the kitchen sink. It takes him three seconds to figure out what to do with it and three minutes to get the lid off. He paints the entire living room red. His mother goes ballistic; then it takes three weeks to clean up the mess, and each step of the process is delineated. They rent a dumpster for the destroyed furniture, strip the wallpaper, sand the woodwork, pick the paint, reject the paint they picked, and on and on in increasingly smaller typeface that makes readers feel as if they are spinning into the void. Once the mess is cleaned up, a year goes by, then two, then three, and an older Tom finds a can of blue paint under the kitchen sink. The time it took MOM

Publisher's Weekly, apparently staffed by only the nambiest of pambies, says that "Tom's unsettling behavior comes out of nowhere." If you don't have a child with unsettling behavior that comes out of nowhere, buddy, you don't have a child! They complain that The Time it Took Tom has "no therapeutic message and no satisfying resolution." Oh, I beg to differ.

Tom paints everything in the house. Everything. And then, surprise! He has to help clean it up! He and Mom pull every ruined item out of the house, Tom accompanies Mom on every time-consuming shopping trip -- on the public bus, by the way -- for furniture and paint, and then back out to get new paint after she hates the first paint. Going step by step by step through the cleanup process makes that time really tangible, and hearing my daughter laugh and groan "Oh, no!" at every new step let me know she really understood that Tom's momentary fun caused a great big long protracted mess. That's pretty therapeutic, at least for me!

At the end, Tom finds another can of paint and gets a mischievous look in his eye... and my daughter starts laughing and screaming "No! Don't do it!" Because she got what Publisher's Weekly failed to get -- Tom isn't a boy behaving badly and not getting punished for it. Tom is Impulse -- that's why he doesn't learn from his behavior, why he has the same cheerful approach to every part of this story. No, Impulse is not properly chagrined -- it never is! It always has such great ideas! And kids have to learn to stop, think, and make careful decisions about those ideas, based on imagined consequences. So, how do they learn that without making a really lot of horrifying mistakes? They don't -- that's what childhood is! But The Time it Took Tom is an object lesson, just like The Boy Who Cried Wolf, an attempt to drive things home before somebody paints the cat.

Laugh out loud funny

A great book for preschool-kindergarten age. The best book to discuss the value of time -- how long is a second, a minute, three hours, three days etc! I read it at a book store, laughed out loud, mentionned it to the other moms hanging around the train table and we bought out the store's stock. We all bought one for ourselves, and then stocked up for Birthday and Christmas presents. You can't go worng for the 4-6 year old set!

An enjoyable romp with red paint

Tom is a mischevious young boy who takes only ONE...TWO...THREE seconds to decide what to do with a can of red paint: paint the entire living room, including the walls, floor, furniture and even the family cat! It takes Mom ten seconds to explode, and the two of them three weeks to fix Tom's mess. The story ends in classic "round" fashion, with Tom finding a can of - you guessed it - blue paint.

The bold line drawings in bright colors are lots of fun and the perfect complement to the text. The book lends itself to an over-the-top dramatic reading, especially sections like Mom freaking out upon finding her entire room painted red. Kids can join in on the "countdown" sections, and it's a good opportunity to talk about both numbers and time. Yes, Tom is completely unrepentant and we all have the sneaking suspicion that the can of blue paint will be put to similar use as the can of red before it, but that's part of the fun of the book. While this isn't what I would consider a classic in the vein of Dr Seuss, it's a very good read nonetheless.

Really helps to understand what is happening when I watch a game

One of best soccer books I have read as really added to my understanding of the games I watch.....

For example, I can now appreciate the pressing game of Bayern and Dortmund, and the German demolition of Brazil in the World Cup semi final which I watched with greater appreciation after reading analysis in this book

I particularly found the analysis of the changing skill sets required position by position illuminating together with the passing of the off-side trap.

All this plus an entertain style and humorous insights not least was the discussion of what motivates Suarez to bite.

Decent book, better than the authors second book but not as good as his first book. I would say about 75% of book is a good read, the other 25% seemed no better than if you were sitting in a bar and you were getting and earful from some tipsy passionate football fan rambling on about whatever it is he talking about
