Genetic Algorithms are adaptive heuristic search algorithm premised on the evolutionary ideas of natural selection and genetic. The basic concept of Genetic Algorithms is designed to simulate processes in natural system necessary for evolution, specifically those that follow the principles first laid down by Charles Darwin of survival of the fittest. This book is designed to provide an in-depth knowledge on the basic operational features and characteristics of Genetic Algorithms. The various operators and techniques given in the book are pertinent to carry out Genetic Algorithm Research Projects. The book also explores the different types are Genetic Algorithms available with their importance. Implementation of Genetic Algorithm concept has been performed using the universal language C/C++ and the discussion also extends to Genetic Algorithm MATLAB Toolbox. Few Genetic Algorithm problems are programmed using MATLAB and the simulated results are given for the ready reference of the reader. The applications of Genetic Algorithms in Machine learning, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Data Mining, Image Processing, and VLSI are dealt to make the readers understand where the concept can be applied.

If first sentence of a book begins: "Charles Darwinian evolution in 1859 is intrinsically a so bust search and optimization mechanism," you know you are in trouble.

This book is both lively and thorough for an introduction. The organization of the book felt natural and made it easier to acquire the material. The authors were clearly knowledgeable and I'd give them five stars, it was a pleasure to read in terms of content.

However, in terms of style, there are numerous typos which can be distracting. Examples include "fro" instead of "for" (page 34), "than" instead of "that" (page 26), and "subjective" instead of "surjective" (page 40), with the later example being particularly unfortunate in that students with light backgrounds in mathematics might not be able to discern the correct meaning. There are also occasional grammatical cul-de-sacs which left me puzzled and guessing the exact meaning of a sentence.

This book has no index. For such a high price, one might expect at least some perfunctory editing and at the very least an index. The excellent content of the book was done a disservice by Springer's poor publication in this case.

Given the strength of the content, though, I'd still recommend this book.

What the who?

I was psyched to get this book but it is, as an earlier reviewer mentioned, unreadable. It seems as though someone tried to translate English to English but had a very hard time. For example, the first sentence of the book mentions a "so bust" search and optimization method. I imagine that would be a robust search and optimization method. This error is not so bad compared to other puzzlers throughout the text. The material seems like it is really good but the text reads more like, well, a comedy of errors. Indeed, as it is written, it is kind of funny. I think sales of the book would go through the roof if they released an edited version in English. I give it two stars for its comedic value and potential.

De Cive ("On the citizen") is one of Hobbes' major works. The book was published originally in Latin from Paris in 1642. The English translation of the work made its first appearance four years later (London 1651) under the title 'Philosophicall rudiments concerning government and society'. It anticipates themes of the better-known Leviathan. The famous phrase bellum omnium contra omnes ("war of all against all") appeared first in De Cive.

Aida Trujillo is the author of the book "A la sombra de mi abuelo". She was born in the Dominican Republic the 23th August 1952 and lived in her country until she was seven years old. Then her family sent her to a boarding school located in Madrid (Spain). Thereafter she went to other schools in Lausanne (Switzerland), Rome (Italy), Barcelona (Spain) and Jacksonville, Fla. (United States of America). She is General Rafael Leonidas Trujillo�s grandaughter, her father is Ramfis his firstborn son and her mother is Octavia Ricart, all of them deceased."A la sombra de mi abuelo" is the first of three books she has published and with this work she won the National Novel Prize, "Manuel de Jes�s Galv�n", of the Dominican Republic. She is the mother of four children: Carlos, Jaime (passed away), Hayd�e and Nicol�s. Her life has lapsed between the Dominican Republic, Spain, Switzerland, France and Italy. Currently she resides in Spain and works for the newspaper "El Nacional Dominicano" as a collaborator. This book is written in Spanish, awaiting to be traduced to other languages.

Excellent history, underwhelming recipes/branding.

This book has some positive things going for it, from a very interesting and thorough history of vermouth to a beautiful layout and gorgeous photography. It's very nice to see this ingredient mulled over in-depth, and there are some very intriguing facts about the decline of vermouth in the US following WWII that I have not seen discussed elsewhere.

That being said, I am fairly disappointed with the blatant branding and focus on NY regional products that runs throughout the second half of the book. I get it, the author invested his time and energy into the Atsby vermouth line and loves the NY area, but this reads more like a list of sponsored recipes for his company/colleagues that you would find in promotional PR material or a paid ad than an honest look at the broad spectrum of vermouth cocktails. That's not to say that they have no place in a cocktail book, especially since the Atsby products are not necessarily interchangeable with other styles, but the sheer amount of times they are called for is overwhelming.

Overall, I'd rate this purchase as 2.5 stars. It is a mixed bag that has some great highlights, but I feel is ultimately a missed opportunity when it comes to providing an impartial take on vermouth, and I probably would not purchase it again.

Perfect for Boozehounds and History Buffs alike!

Adam Ford has crafted a solidly informative, interesting, and entertaining look into the history of a beverage much maligned in recent cocktail culture. From the book's very introduction, Ford puts the reader at ease and lets everyone know--loud and clear--that although vermouth may have a reputation as your grandmother's drink, sitting under a fine layer of dust in the back of an aging liquor cabinet, the history of the drink is both vibrant, multi-faceted, and will be told by Ford in a way that makes it approachable. I often found myself chuckling at Ford's quips and comments throughout the book. His writing style make it feel like you're sitting next to him at your local watering hole and easily guides the reader through the ancient history, modern American history, and even cocktail recipes in way that is seamless and seemingly effortless. While the read was easy, the information was dense and textured, and structured in a way that build logically and left me both satisfied and thirsty for more after finishing the book. Much like Heather Greene's "Whiskey, Distilled" and Robert Simonsson's history of the Old Fashioned cocktail, Vermouth crafts both a history and a set of approachable modern applications of a drink that takes the reader on an interconnected journey throughout human history as well as through modern culture. I didn't feel as if I only walked away with knowledge of vermouth, but of the cultures within which it has existed for centuries. Also worth mentioning is the absolutely stunning photography peppered throughout-If you doubt the vermouth can be sexy, the visuals alone here will prove you wrong!

Vermouth is perfectly timed to the modern resurgence of vermouth in cocktails around the country and deserves a spot on the bookshelf of any cocktail enthusiast, cultural historian, American history buff, or simply anyone who enjoys a good read over a stiff drink.

the author did a great job of drawing me in to what I previously ...

I initially got the book for a friend of mine who is way into vermouth and books (I’m not), but ended up keeping it for myself. Right from the start, the author did a great job of drawing me in to what I previously thought was a very un-sexy world of vermouth. First, the book is beautiful -- he obviously put a lot of thought and effort into the aesthetics – cover to cover with gorgeous photos throughout. Then he writes so passionately about his journey with vermouth, how he fell in love, and it kind of makes you want to love it too. It may be a little heavy on vermouth history for my taste, but if you’re interested in that sort of thing, he begins with vermouth in China thousands of years ago and brings you up to date. And for the drink lover/vermouth novice like myself, there are a ton of really interesting cocktail recipes that look delicious! I also found out the author created his own brand of vermouth. Now that’s serious! But if he put the same love and care into creating his vermouth as he did with his book about it, it’s probably worth more than a try.
