I have no idea why I'm sopping wet in this photo, but I'm going to guess it's because I rolled in something filthy or spilled something on myself. Hosing me down was my dad’s favorite method for cleaning me off. Here I am with my dad in his garden, which he adores and whose upkeep he takes very seriously. "It's my first love, besides your mother and horse racing. And you and your brothers, too, I suppose," he’s said. My dad used to carry me on his shoulders quite a bit when I was a child--until the time I accidentally urinated on him while I was up there. We were at a neighbor’s house and he quickly ran outside, threw me off, ripped off his shirt, then hosed me down like he was from the CDC and I'd come in contact with the Ebola Virus.

My dad is an avid reader, and all throughout my childhood he’d come home after working for 12 hours and we’d sit on the couch and read together. My family’s trip to the Grand Canyon in 1983 was one of only two family vacations we took. It coincided with the time when my dad started to lose his hair, and decided he'd wear hats to mask his increasing baldness. It wasn’t long before he changed his tune, tossed the caps, and decided he didn’t care what anyone else thought.

FUNNY FUNNY FUNNY

So, I bought this book on a whim, since it was on sale. I love the Kindle and Kindle app, but I tend to buy sale ebooks (max $5) … I just keep it cheap if I can’t have a physical copy to hold and love and flip through. There are exceptions to that silly little personal rule, but not many.

All I can say is that I loved it! Halpern’s dad is a real character and his analogies and the lessons he teaches his son are colorful, to say the least. I laughed until I cried multiple times and my poor wife had to listen to me repeat quote after quote … out of earshot of my kids, of course. The book is definitely Rated R for the volume of cursing.

This doesn’t bother me, but I’m throwing it out there out of respect for those who it may turn off.

I really enjoyed getting to know the Halpern family. And, that’s really how I felt … as if I got to peek inside their lives. No family is perfect, and I enjoyed the honesty and quirkiness.

Kudos to Halpern–great book!

A father and son's love knows no boundaries. Four letter words yes, boundaries no.

Reading Justin Halpern's book brought back memories of my own father's words of wisdom. Although my father (a southern gentleman by birth) was somewhat more prudent in his use of curse words and references to sex, he never hesitated in telling his children (or anyone else for that matter) exactly what was on his mind. I remember when I introduced him to my first really serious girlfriend, a young woman who was more than a foot shorter than myself. He took me aside and said, "What's the matter, didn't they have one in your size?" However, when we later announced our engagement he was the first to congratulate us and brought out the bottle of Cold Duck that he was saving for such an occasion.

When the author was 28 years old he was suddenly dumped by his girlfriend and needed a place to live when he made the decision to move back in with his mother and his then retired father. Working from his new "home" as a writer for Maxim Magazine gave him the time (an awful lot of time according to the author) to see his father through new, adult eyes. The terror that he had felt in his youth due to his father's "bluntness" began to be replaced by admiration for the only person that he had ever known who really spoke his mind without self-censorship. It was only then that he began to see the wisdom in his father's tersely worded observations and began posting them on his Twitter page with the same title as this book.

Because Mr. Halpern Sr. has the gift of being able to "swear with great expertise" I can't quote many of them on Amazon, but here are a few of my favorite PG rated quips:

ON THE DEATH OF OUR FIRST DOG
He was a good dog. Your brother is pretty broken up about it, so go easy on him. He had a nice last moment with Brownie before the vet tossed him in the garbage.

ON MY BLOODY NOSE
What happened? Did somebody punch you in the face?!... The what? The air is dry? Do me a favor and tell people you got punched in the face.

ON THE MEDICINAL EFFECT OF BACON
You worry too much. Eat some bacon... What? No, I got no idea if it'll make you feel better, I just made too much bacon.

ON SHOPPING FOR PRESENTS FOR HIS BIRTHDAY
If it's not bourbon or sweatpants, it's going in the garbage... No, don't get creative. Now is not a creative time. Now is a bourbon and sweatpants time.

ON BEING ONE WITH THE WILDERNESS
I'm not sure you can call that roughing it son... Well, for one, there was a (EXPLETIVE) minivan parked forty feet from your sleeping bags.

ON SILENCE
I just want silence... Jesus, it doesn't mean I don't like you. It just means right now, I like silence more.

If you grew up with a Ward Cleaver type of father (or wish that you did) you may find Mr. Halpern's way of expressing himself to be crude, unfeeling, or even uncaring. Far from it. The author augments the pithy quotes (some recent, other's from his childhood) with brief essays that gives the reader a little more of the back story of this unique father-and-son relationship. Is it ideal? I have learned that, for me at least, the best way to judge someone's parenting is by the adult it produces. Justin Halpern's book reads to me as a love letter to a father that always tells it like it is and who made you who you are.

My father passed away at age 87 in 2008. At his wake (we are Irish after all so alcohol was involved) his former co-workers, friends and family paid tribute to him by telling our own little stories and quotes from a man who could be described as both taciturn and brutally honest. The recollections from my three brothers, my sons and myself included stories and things that my dad said that to the outside observer might have also seemed acerbic or even caustic, but to us it was the way that he showed us that he cared

This book is not for those addicted to a PC idea of what a father should be or for those who are easily offended by real life conversation. But if you, like me, value frank and seemingly brutal honesty (especially from someone who brought you into this world) this book will delight you as much as it has me. I only wish that I could give this to my dad for Father's Day. He would have laughed his (BLEEP) off!

Hysterically funny, and...

Even funnier if you know or knew someone like Dad. I had the luck to know a man like him; he was my best friend's father. He told you the truth in no uncertain terms, usually in language he learned in the Navy. I could hear Gene's voice throughout this book, and feel my heart swell up missing him. Justin Halpern's Dad is the most laugh-inducing, hard-swearing, truth-telling guy you'll ever laugh until you cry over. You might not approve of his language but you're going to appreciate his honesty, how he is there for his family, and his blunt way of telling you what he thinks of everything. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

About the Author
Grace Ioppolo is the founder and director of the Henslowe-Alleyn Digitisation Project and is Professor of Shakespearean and Early Modern Drama in the Department of English and American Literature at the University of Reading, England. She is the author of Dramatists and Their Manuscripts in the Age of Shakespeare, Jonson, Middleton, and Heywood: Authorship, Authority, and the Playhouse (2006) and Revising Shakespeare (1991). She has edited Shakespeare’s King Lear for Norton and has published widely on textual transmission, the history of the book and literary and historical manuscripts, most recently as the co-editor of Elizabeth I and the Culture of Writing (2007). She is the General Editor of The Collected Works of Thomas Heywood, forthcoming 2012–15.

AS EVER THE ONE-STOP SOURCE FOR PRIMARY RESEARCH, BUT I LIKE THE OXFORD

Right off the bat, please let me share my preference for the The Oxford Shakespeare: The History of King Lear. Above any other presentation for reading and direct research, nothing for me can top good old Yale Professor Tucker Brooke's conflated edition The Tragedy Of King Lear (The Yale Shakespeare), the best thing ever to emerge from Yale, even considering some recent presidents. I find Brooke's a joy to read and the Oxford wonderful to study, retaining as it does the old format of text at top half of page, a middle strand of variorum and then a bottom third of notes, with the great associated articles and essays, etc.

That said, let us turn to this recent Norton Critical Edition. While the creative, artistic Oxford may resemble driving a Porsche (I do not know as I never have), the Norton is more a utilitarian vehicle: gets the job done and has all of the works. Go to Norton for one stop research.

Please permit one brief return. Professor Tucker Brooke did what nearly every editor has since done, and did it very well, in conflating the Quarto with the Folio editions of Lear, and being straightforward and honest about this, and indicating very well through punctuation and footnotes which section came from which edition.

Lear first emerged early in its writing in a Quarto edition, probably before many performances. The Folio emerged much later, losing 300 lines of the Q. while gaining another one hundred. In the eighteenth century another edition was prepared for performance by Nahum Tate, changing much of the play (Cordelia marries Edgar; France is out!) and tacking on a happy ending. This happier version remained in performance for well over a century, until someone dared play Lear as originally written once again.

Since then the debate has been: which version of Lear to play, Quarto or Folio. The Folio is often supposed to have been altered to honor new censorship laws and to please the new King, who might find offense in Edgar mocking astrology (although Edmund does so quite thoroughly), etc. The sight of a mad King presiding over legal proceedings might also give offense, and so we lose the wonderful "mock trial" scene in the Folio. For a variety of reasons the Quarto was therefore dismissed by scholars as somehow inferior (while containing some of the of the best jokes and lines!) and the Folio preferred.

Professor Brooke did us a great favor therefore in resurrecting the Quarto to its deserved respectability, and conflating it with the Folio, as nearly all editors have since done. Unfortunately for a recent brief spell, the Folio re-emerged as the ONLY authentic version, and so the late recordings done with the great Lear's Paul Scofield and Sir Gielgud were Folio only, most likely to their own great frustration. To miss these wonderful voices in the abbreviated Folio version, and lose their renditions of the mock trial and other Quarto only scenes, is a great loss to the language and to each one of us. In fact, amazon refuses to correct its product page of the Gielgud recording, and insists upon calling it the "abridged" edition. Hear him roar at King Lear (BBC Radio Presents); he is magnificent, if abridged by the Folio.

In any case our editor here at the Norton, Grace Ioppolo of the University of Reading (a most auspicious name), claims strongly for the Folio version, and yet conflates the Quarto, as she explains, in condescension to the public, to us groundlings, as we expect it. Nevertheless, her notes do not explain in every instance when we are seeing Folio only and when we are seeing what only appears in the Quarto. The text page does not list the variorum in a thin band across the lower half, as we come to expect in the Arden or Oxford, but saves all such notes for one incredibly thick and jumbled few pages at the end of the play, impossible to read, as all italic with some bold faced headings included. We see very few footnotes explaining the text, and I have already loaded my margins with marginalia in which I dispute her reading (not her university, her interpretation), although I do find her to come the closest of any editor in interpreting nearly courageously the true implications of "If I had thee in Lipsbury pinfold" although immediately she misreads in the same line "care for me." Courageous in the first, she loses heart in the latter.

In brief, we often find it useful to turn to the Norton for primary sources, and indeed we find here several presented in abridged form. We receive just enough for inclusion in term papers, etc., but not the full source. We read very brief snippets from the Mirror for Magistrates, of course, Holinshed, certainly, Spenser, Sir Phlilip Sidney, James VI of Scotland and James the First of England, Samuel Harsnett's A Declaration of Egregious Popish Impostures, and Camden. We are also given a sniff of original documents from the case of Bryan Annesley, but again each of these is so brief as to incite desire to read elsewhere. Such snippets may be of use to the undergraduate desperate for citations (who in any case has the Internet), but not the more leisurely armchair scholar.

The whole history of Lear criticism is seen also in brief glimpses of snippets, from Nahum Tate's preface through Samuel Johnson's Notes, and Charles Lamb and William Hazlitt to more modern criticism, including director Peter Brooks, who filmed and directed Scofield as Lear. Also included are abridgements from Lynda Boose's "Father and Bride in Shakespeare," Janet Adelman's "Suffocating Mothers," Margot Heinemann's "King Lear and the World Upside Down," Foakes's "Hamlet vs. Lear," and Stanley Cavell's "The Avoidance of Love."

A few scenes from adaptations are included, including the Tate version which supplanted for so long Shakespeare's Lear. We find in this section the UNABRIDGED sonnet by John Keats entitled "On Sitting Down to Read King Lear Once Again (a title nearly as long as the Sonnet in the spirit of Deadline Poet Calvin Trillin), whose relationship to the play itself is tenuous at best. good review, good intro from another field

This book concisely goes through the derivations of elasticity; it is well written and relatively easy to read for a textbook. The numerous tables and flowcharts make this book a very good quick look up reference.

As I am coming at elasticity from another background, I found that a quick review of this book allows me to read and understand papers in this field much more clearly.

The "rosetta stone" table for tensor and vector/dyadic notation of common operators in one of the later chapters is quite useful. I don't think I have seen that spelled out anywhere else. Most books just use one convention or the other.

Another two good backgound chapters are the summary of the introduction of Jeffreys Cartesian Tensors book and a chapter summarizing formulas from general curvilinear coordinates.

Journalist Baglio follows a Catholic priest through the latter's training to become an exorcist in this incisive look at the church's rite of exorcism and its use in contemporary life. Baglio began delving into the topic after hearing about a course at a Vatican-affiliated university, where he met and befriended the Rev. Gary Thomas, a priest in the diocese of San Jose, Calif. Thomas took the exorcism course at the request of his bishop and subsequently apprenticed himself to a seasoned exorcist. Keenly aware of the misunderstanding that abounds about exorcism through film images, Baglio sets about dispelling misconceptions and does so skillfully, separating the real from the imaginary in the mysterious and unsettling sphere of the demonic. Both Thomas and Baglio were changed by their exposure to the rite. Thomas grew spiritually during the process, which bolstered his desire to help his parishioners, and Baglio, previously a nominal Catholic, reconnected with his faith. In his first book, journalist Baglio follows Brother Gary, an American Roman Catholic priest, as he learns about exorcism firsthand during a sabbatical in Rome, first through a university class and later through an apprenticeship with an Italian exorcist. Spectacular exorcisms do occur, but most of the book focuses on other topics, from Father Gary's early life to the scientific controversies surrounding exorcism. The Rite provides more questions than answers: Why do some exorcists use methods not approved by the Church? Has the popularity of alternative religions led to a rise in possessions and exorcisms, as Baglio's interviewees maintain? If exorcism is a Christian ritual, why does it benefit Hindus and Muslims? The Rite Stuff

This is a well-written book by a journalist who covers an American priest's sabbatical in Rome to learn how to administer exorcism. The book lays a solid foundation for understanding both the practical and theological underpinnings of the actions of demons as understood by the Catholic Church and its measured response to claims of possession. One of the things that makes the book interesting is the reserved and often skeptical approach that the Church takes evaluating claims of possession and its insistence that psychiatric and other disorders be ruled out before proceeding forward. Another strong aspect of the book is that it shows the education and apprenticeship that the priest undergoes in becoming appointed as the exorcist for a diocese. The author does an excellent job of describing the personalities of the key subjects of the book and presents descriptions of exorcisms in a very measured way. If you are looking for a book that covers an obscure part of the Catholic Church in a respectful and matter-of-fact manner, The Rite would be an excellent choice.

You Don't Really Believe Those Exorcist Stories Do You?

This question (my review headline) was recently asked of me by the Jesuit President of a famous Jesuit university after I had announced to a small group that Rev. Gary Thomas, an exorcist, would be one of our featured guests in the 2010-2011 Oakland Diocese's Catholics@Work Speakers Series. His disparaging response is characteristic of today's American Catholic Clergy as many find the concept of the Devil and exorcism to be a sideshow that no "serious minded "priest would lose time considering and would just as soon forget.

Those who doubt the existence of evil and the Devil are reminded in "The Rite" to be mindful of French poet Charles Baudelaire's philosophic proclamation - "the Devil had finally convinced the world that he no longer existed."

Fortunately, an unintentional spoiler has come along - Matt Baglio, an ambivalent "cultural" Catholic who was living in Italy as a freelance writer and Vatican journalist. In 2005, Baglio heard that one of the Vatican universities was offering a course entitled "Exorcism and the Prayer of Liberation." While writing about exorcism was not at the top of his list of subjects to write about, Baglio was curious, believing this might be a public relations stunt, registered for the course, and ended up writing "The Rite" about his experience and observations.

Baglio quickly learned that the students were anything but superstitious or puritanical and befriended fellow American Fr. Thomas who impressed him with his honesty and transparency. This marked the beginning of an important journey that both would make together. For Fr. Thomas, a story of a "remarkable American priest who answered the call of his Bishop to become the appointed exorcist for his diocese...who delved deeply into a world he never knew existed, completing the course and participating in over 80 exorcisms along with a senior Italian exorcist. As a result, his view of the world - and his place in it - changed dramatically." For Baglio, a story of journalist reconnecting with his faith in a way he never intended or expected, experiencing a "phenomenon" that filled him with immense joy, also changing his view of the world and his place in it.

Baglio's "The Rite" provides a compelling, hard to put down story that believers and non-believers alike will find satisfying and provocative. He provides an intelligent, myth-busting look at exorcism that explains what the Church really teaches about demonic possession, what the priest and the victim experience, and the critical role of an exorcist in today's orthodox secularist society.

The book is being adapted to film and is presently being shot in Budapest with Anthony Hopkins playing Thomas's teacher. The film is to be released in January 2011.

I highly recommend "The Rite" and bet it will also change your view of the world and your place in it.

A Fascinating Window into Exorcism Today

Baglio was a journalist in Rome when he heard about a new class at a Vatican-affiliated university on exorcism. Fascinated if the church in fact still believed in it, he attended and met one Fr. Gary. This American priest came to provide this interesting window into exorcism today in the Roman Catholic church.

This is a great read about how the American bishops were encouraged to appoint a priest to be trained in Rome as their exorcist. Californian Fr. Gary is such an appointee, and then the book unfolds his trip to Rome, class and development as a certified exorcist.

Not all of this was new to me, except that I too had the major misperception that the Rite of Exorcism, if done properly, cast the demon/s out immediately. Fr. Gary discovers this also, that for some it took decades. The proliferation of demon activity in Italy shocked me as well, but shouldn't as we know the proliferation of the occult is growing worldwide. So much for all spirituality being the same.

We Lutherans concur with this belief that the devil and his cohorts are real and active. Before my being certified at Seminary to be eligible for a call into the ministry, three sem professors questioned me for three solid hours on theological matters. At the end, one asked: do you believe in exorcism. I quickly answered yes. They then demanded that I provide evidence supporting this from Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions, which I did. They then asked what I would do to determine that a person was potentially demon possessed, and how I would proceed. I responded with much the same criteria that is used in this book by these exorcists, and that I would contact them to find out how to proceed.

Many Christians besides Roman Catholics hold these same Biblical views about demon possession and exorcism. Interested parties will want to read two good volumes on this: J.W. Montgomery edited a great volume: Demon Possession, and Kurt E. Koch's "Occult Bondage and Deliverance."

DIY Skin Care

I ordered this e-book when I decided I would like to buy and make skin care products that contain only the ingredients needed to do the job. With the recipes in this book you can make lotion bars and creams that contain no unnecessary or questionable ingredients. There is also support from the author at her website and blog for answers to any questions you may have along the way. I do not like the feel of lotions on my skin, especially on my hands, and whenever I used hand cream in the past I immediately washed it off. I like the feel of these products on my skin. I made the Foot Protector Bar from this book for the teachers in my school when sandal and flip flop season began. They loved them! The author has a companion book at her website with ideas on making similar DIY lotions and bars to give as gifts, with suggestions and resources for styles and packaging. If you would like to control the ingredients in your skin care products, this e-book is for you.
Links to the author's website, step-by-step videos for each product, and resources for ingredients and packaging are imbedded in the book.

love this book!

These are simple easy to follow recipies without too many ingredients that give you a great finished project. These recipies prove it isnt the number of ingredients that make a great product, its the RIGHT igredients that make a great product! The ingredients are available on her website but also easy to find in stores. Execpt for the zinc oxide used in the sunscreen, I can't find it in stores but it is available on her website. There is also another book available on her website that has a fantastic recipie for chocolate peppermint lotion bars. Excellent book for both beginners and experienced lotion / body care product makers.

I was disappointed that this ebook didn't have more recipes in it! The recipes in the book were ok. I made the
Hard bar lotion. Turned out well. The concept of lotion in a bar was new to me.
