Tim Burton-esque artwork and a powerful, fearless, princess.

So this book is an incredibly fast reader. Finished it in under an hour. But damn, it's definitely a unique spin-off. The story itself ventures off into the journey of Snow White. Her wedding is about to take place and a few of the dwarves set off to collect some items pertaining to her celebration. While in town they hear word of a curse spreading throughout the country that sets those sticking around into a deep sleep. Once coming back, they pass off their new knowledge to Snow and she decided postpone the wedding to find the source of the curse in hopes of defeating it before it spreads even further. So unlike your typical Snow White, she pretty much changed herself into a Joan of Arc type figure and sets off fearlessly. Won't give anymore details, but clearly the sleeping curse is where the Sleeping Beauty comes into play and let's just say things are rather unexpected. If this was a full blown out novel, I can only imagine the details and story progression they could have played with. Even so, it's set out like your typical fairy tale. But it is very dark. The illustrations are beyond beautiful and really they contributed to my liking of this. If you're into fairytales or into the macabre, you will not be disappointed. Truly unique!

Read me this while you tuck me in

Isn't everything Neil Gaiman writes magical? Well, I'm not sure about the Duran Duran biography he did but everything else is haunting, magical and humorous. The Sleeper and the Spindle is no exception. I was surprised that he managed to slip in a twist in such a short book but really that's just me selling the man short. The illustrations are gorgeous to go with the story. The cobweb strands of other fairy tales can be felt it the book but it certainly stands a part. When my son is a bit older I look forward to reading him this particular story. The heroine is pragmatic and brave with nary a hint of foolhardiness that seems to plague these hero types. Truly magical.

A new favorite

I read this to my 6 year old daughter over the course of a few nights last week. We both really enjoyed it. Some of the vocabulary was challenging for her, but it was a great opportunity to discuss the new words and the broader issue of why an author would use one word instead of another. The illustrations are exquisite and intricate which makes this a great transitional story for kids growing out of picture books with only a few sentences on each page.

The book also includes some really wonderful but subtle feminist themes and includes a lesson about not making assumptions

Interesting

I enjoyed this book because it wasn't like any other fantasy book I had read, which i'm usually not into, for the record. But I liked reading Aware. There were many spelling and grammar errors, but that is to be expected with a self published author.

I have already recommended this book to several of my friends, of which they cannot wait to get their hands on.

I liked how there was a new problem more often, instead of the regular boring reads that i usually go for.

Aware was interesting, and it made you think about what this girl/animal was going through.

Not a very long book, 143 pages or so, and I would also recommend it for that reason too, if you just want a quick read, this is the book to choose.

great storyline

This is a self published author and it is evident when reading, my inner editor came out numerous times while reading which probably took away from enjoying the storyline itself. It has lots of potential and was a good short read.

The premise of the storyline was an interesting take, an animals perspective of the classic "island of dr Moreau." The overall character development kept you interested throughout the story, though I have to say I am tired of the woman changing to be with her man twist.

Robert L. Hilliard has been Dean of Graduate Studies and Dean of Continuing Education and taught, in addition to media writing, courses such as Media Programming, The Media and the Holocaust, Hate.com, Communication Law, and Pictures of Protest. He has served as Chief of the Public Broadcasting Branch of the Federal Communications Commission and Chair of the Federal Interagency Media Committee for the White House. A frequent lecturer on media and education on all continents, Dr. Hilliard is the author or co-author of more than thirty books, including several leading media texts. Among his recent books are HOLLYWOOD SPEAKS OUT: PICTURES THAT DARED TO PROTEST REAL WORLD ISSUES and, with co-author Michael Keith, THE BROADCAST CENTURY AND BEYOND: A HISTORY OF AMERICAN RADIO AND TELEVISION, DIRTY DISCOURSE: SEX AND INDECENCY IN BROADCASTING, and THE QUIETED VOICE: THE RISE AND DEMISE OF LOCALISM IN AMERICAN BROADCASTING. Writing for Television, Radio, and New Media

This is the seventh edition of this book which, although apparently written as a text for use in college courses, actually serves very well for those of us who are interested in writing for special audiences, i.e., electronic media and video productions, etc. It's completely up to date and even a little ahead of itself, which is no mean feat in this age of rapid technology. I'm impressed with the way the writing principles and techniques are put across, but mostly with all the examples of what this kind of script should actually look like, on paper. Included are chapters on interviews and talk shows, corporate and children's programs, plays, everything. The book is quite expensive, but when I think about how much it will be referred to and constantly skimmed for new information, I can certainly justify the price. I am a creative writing teacher sometimes and a freelance writer all the time. As the author of The Complete Guide to Writers Groups, Conferences and Workshops (Wiley), I write the subsequent spin-off Ask Eileen column for iUniverse and America Online's Writers Club. I get tons of inquiries about how to write for the new interactive media and find this book a marvelous resource. It covers every aspect, leaves no stone unturned. I'm always referring to books on writers and writing and this one stands more than a cut above the rest. Oh, and one more thing,it's responsible. It doesn't pretend to be a quick-fix to making tons of money; it emphasizes professionalism in the best sense of the word. It's a fine investment, a fine, fine piece of work.

Overpriced Common Sense

Like most everyone reading this book, I am a college student who was forced to purchase it for a class in writing.

PLEASE HEAR ME OUT BEFORE YOU READ THE REST OF THIS REVIEW!

This book has all the material you need to become better at writing, but for how much it costs, it is not worth the admission. You can get much cheaper books, such as "Writing for Visual Media" that have just as much information for a fraction of the cost.

That, and this book is really dense. Don't expect any visuals any time soon. I'm not really a visual learner, but after 50 pages of nothing but small print text, it gets old quick.

If you, like me, are a student, buy this book for a cheap as you can so you can resell it. If you are an adult wanting to hone your reading and writing skills, then find a cheaper book.

Just because this book is expensive doesn't mean it is the best.

The author is very knowledgeable that is certain, but he is terribly verbose overall. If he wrote more simply then the book would be half the size it is. This is the case for numerous textbooks so I'm used to this by now, but still it makes me bitter. The pictures are helpful, but the script formats are not as concise as they should be.

Six years after his murder at age 25, Tupac Shakur is a legendary figure in hip hop. Befitting his celebrity are at least a half-dozen books on his life and death, including two "serious" biographies (Armond White's Rebel for the Hell of It and Michael Eric Dyson's Holler If You Hear Me). This latest is more in the vein of bodyguard Frank Alexander's Got Your Back, an intimate memoir by someone who was close to the rapper and knew him outside of his role as a superstar. Today a manager of musical acts, Bastfield met then-newcomer Shakur at the Baltimore School of the Arts in the mid-1980s. Interestingly, the book is written with genuine affection and comes across less as a quick cash-in project than as the author's attempt at personal closure for a lost friend. Glimpses of Shakur's occasional teenage awkwardness are contrasted with his developing talent and charisma, as well as his ability to inspire negative attention, even hatred, among his peers, by virtue of his unique combination of intelligence, sensitivity, and skill. Bastfield dedicates his paean to Tupac Shakur, preeminent icon of what Kitwana calls the hip-hop generation, to "Black men who have been an inspiration to the world," such as Marcus Garvey, Bob Marley, and Imhotep. Shakur died long before he had become a world-inspirer, which explains why all biographies of him tend to be also about the state of black youth culture since his heyday. Bastfield's book is better than many others on Shakur because he knew Shakur before he was famous. Bastfield relies on his personal memories of Shakur's teen years, the experiences he and Shakur shared, and a fair amount of apparently meaningful, though unreferenced, research. While readable, interesting, and sexually graphic, this probably isn't the definitive assessment of Shakur. Mike Tribby

A Fresh Perspective

Tupac Shakur has always been interesting to me. A fellow book club member read, reviewed and praised this book, so immediately I was intrigued. Throughout the years I have read snippets of Tupac's life that also piqued my curiosity. Much of what was written and portrayed prior to his death was the life of a thug rapper and little was written about his intelligence, his mind and his childhood. Darrin Bastfield's book, Back In the Day: My Life and Times With Tupac Shakur is the book to read if you want a fresh perspective on Tupac, the child and the man he became.
Bastfield does an excellent job of portraying his life with Tupac and other friends during their days at the Baltimore School for the Performing Arts. Through his portrayal we see a child raised in poverty literally; a child raised by a mother both weak and strong and a child forced to become a man much too soon. Bastfield is mesmerized by Tupac's intelligence and his excellent skill at acting and so was I. He is surprised at Tupac's love of Shakespeare and so was I.
There is one additional book written about Tupac Shakur by a writer that I highly respect but Back In the Day is the beginning and is necessary because it sets the stage for all others to come. Who better to write about Tupac's childhood than a childhood friend? One more note: this brother can write!

Missing You Tupac

"Back in the Day" is a must read for friend or foe of Tupac. Prior to my reading the first page Tupac held a special place in my heart I reserve for celebrities. Upon turning the last page and digesting Darrin Keith Bastfields' words, Tupac Amaru Shakur became my friend and brother. A loss that was magnified ten times after finishing the book.
The author takes us on a trip down memory lane of his school days and neighborhood times in Baltimore with Tupac, with mentions of Jada Pinkett now Jada Pinkett Smith and Dana M. Smith a.ka. Mouse the human beatbox. In the prologue Darrin Keith Bastfield says "And it is my intention that all of you have this firsthand experience, and be duly affected by it." I can attest that I have been affected and will remain so for a long time.
I want to thank the author for validating my thoughts regarding Tupacs' personality. Behind his eyes I knew lived a beautiful genius who purred like a cat, but the media promoted him as a untamed bear. We miss you Tupac and again thank you Mr. Bastfield.

A different view of Tupac (RIP)

I liked this book quite a bit.
Mainly because it offered a different perspective than most other books about Tupac.
This book was written by a teenage friend who experieced the same things Tupac himself experienced. They 'shared the struggle' of trying to better themselves in a very harsh environment.
This book shows the almost relentless passion Tupac had to try and influence the world around him in a positive way. And the internal struggle he had with some of his actions. He knew of the contradiction and was trying to evolve. Too bad he was cut short in his quest.
One of the most telling insights to the basis of Tupac's personality is the answer to the question one of his earlist teachers asked. "What do you want to be when you grow up?"
For those who haven't ever looked too deeply into Tupac's more intellectual and compassionate side, there is a surprise in store, Tupac's heart. For those of us that knew he was much more than a thug, you'll see more and more of his depth.
An easy read that kept me flippin pages..
