About the Author
Gregory J. Madden, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Psychology at Utah State University. He earned a Master's degree in Behavior Analysis from the University of North Texas is 1992 and a PhD in Psychology from West Virginia University in 1995.

After completing a three-year NIH-funded post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Vermont, Madden held faculty appointments at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and the University of Kansas before joining the faculty at Utah State University.

Madden's research falls under the umbrella of Behavioral Economics, with an emphasis on impulsive choice and health decision making. He is the author or co-author of a number of the seminal scientific papers in the study of delayed-reward discounting and its relation to addictions. His research in this area is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (National Institute on Drug Abuse). He also holds grants from the US Department of Agriculture. The latter grants support behavioral-economic approaches to influencing dietary choices made by children in school cafeterias.

Madden co-edited, with Warren K. Bickel, Impulsivity: The Behavioral and Neurological Science of Discounting (APA Books) and currently serves as the Editor of the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior established in 1958, the flagship journal of basic research in behavior analysis.

A novel on Ataturk

If you want to have a less fantasized and a more detailed biography of Ataturk, you should read Patrick Kinross or Andrew Mango. This book is close to fiction than to history. Some parts are exagerated to create a tension and a push to read the text. Moreover the narrative usually does not give any clue why he moved in a certain way. During the book the plot is more important than the information. If you are distant to the history of Ottoman Empire or Turkey, you may easily adopt an unrealistic view.

Inspirational, a fitting tribute to a great modern leader

H. C. Armstrong, the author of Grey Wolf, has a unique style bordering on the romantic, and the factual. To blend the two alongwith a narrative touch is a unique achievement which makes reading easy and informative.
Grey Wolf is a book about the founder of modern Turkey. It is an account of the salvage of a once great nation whose influence stretched from the Egypt to Central Asia, and whose forces, in the author's own words, "knocked on the doors of Vienna ". Of how a general in the Turkish Army rallied the people of his country with the slogan "Turkey for Turks". It is an account of hopes, dreams. failure, and a prayer that the ideologies that form the Turkish identity do not die.
It is good and easy reading without requiring any prior knowledge of history. It is informative, a good lesson on how to build nations, a guide to modern leadership in today's parameters.
It is, ultimately, a good book.

Reviewing Ataturk

Ataturk may have been a dictator; brutal and vicious in his forceful transformation of Turkey from a weakening Ottoman Empire, to a Westernized nation-state, but today, he is Turkey's national hero; the father of the Turk.

From a rough childhood, to joining the military, Mustafa Kemal stands out as different. Some liked him, but many did not. He possessed leadership skills, and knew how to put them into good practice. His courage and celebrated fortitude cannot be overlooked.

Ataturk may have ruled with an iron-fist; brought to an end the longest lasting empire; and Westernized Turkey to the extent of perhaps causing an identity crisis, but he wanted a Turkey for Turks.

Ataturk the dictator; the hero.

The author remains objective to the best of his ability, and gives us, the readers, the chance to make a final judgment. I enjoyed the book. The chapters are short, and not at all boring - at least for me. I would recommend it to those who are interested.

Time for an update.

I have reviewed and ordered this book as a text for my Typography students. It is very encompassing and thorough, providing many examples of typefaces and type usage. I probably would have given this review 5 stars if this was not the same publication that appeared in 1992. This book is worth keeping refreshed. The authors have gone to great lengths to provide excellent "contemporary" examples, so after 8 years it is time to address the issue of contemporary. Still, it is the best I could find out of many, and have adopted it for my course.

The Truth is out about Neoclassical Economics, its bunk.

E.K. Hunt's book provided an excellent as well as indepth portrayal of the development of economic thought. The book explains in throrough detail the various points of origin for economic theory and the two roads that have been taken most prevalently since the time of Adam Smith. The strength of the book lies in its analysis of modern mainstream theory and the documentation of its shortcomings. E.K. Hunt exposes the weaknesses of mainstream economics while at the same time offering an explanation for its continued study in the face of its theoretical inaccuracies. Mainstream economics carries on because it is on ideological friendly terms with the existing economic system. Regardless of the flaws in mainstream theory, and in capitalism in general, the continued reproduction of the economic system relies on the ability of those "scientists," whose responsibility it is to study the system, to provide a theoretical framework consistent with the reigning system. Without a scientific basis for its defense, the economic system and the economic elites benefitting from the system would have a hard time defending the results of a much less than perfect market economy. In the future I suggest reviewers of this book take the time to closely analyze the functioning of the capitalist economy before writing a review based solely on a seminar class. However, for many I suppose ignorance is bliss. Thank goodness E.K. Hunt doesn't view the world from the perspective of one's head in sand.

Histories of economics are generally crippled by one or another ideological vice, or else misunderstandings of the development of theory, almost an arcane pursuit. This comprehensive history of economic thought gives a critical look at the mainline, the development from Smith to the the marginalists, with everything else draped around that, and the result is refreshingly clear, though charges of bias are inevitable. One problem is that economic theory is beset with cleverly complicated fictions, and those who believe them become confused experts. The slightly distanced perspective here is usefully insightful, taken as a broad canvas.

OK collection of very similar stories

This wasn't really what I was expecting, though I can't say the description was wrong. Well-written in general (barring a typo or two), this collection features very sloooow muscle growth, more centered around people working out a lot than using magic or technology. The stories end up feeling really similar, and there isn't really any variety. If you like the first story in the book, you'll like them all - but if like me you thought it was kind of "meh", then that's how you'll feel about all the others. I was hoping for more magical or unexplained transformations, or at least some healthy variety in story types, but not here, I'm afraid. It was decent for what it was, but it wasn't particularly great.

Look, this is not SUPPOSED to surplant the King James Version[which has spurious translations, as anyone who has read the Greek knows.But i digress] This is an interesting and faithful attempt to re-interpert Scripture ,much in the same way the version" Good News for Modern Man" did 35 years ago. Reaching oput to people who normally feel excluded is a GOOD thing, especially those on the "margins" whom most congregations would hardly welcome. A good effort, an act of kindness by the author.Well Done

Great for first time readers of the Bible

This is not meant to be a study Bible. This is meant to be a Bible that gets people, who would normally not read the Bible, reading the Bible. My daughter's boyfriend read this from cover to cover and LOVED it. He had never read the Bible before. This got him interested and understanding things in his own language and now he is ready to switch to a study Bible. I heard the author speak many years ago and he explained that this was not a "translation" it was a paraphrase much like the Message.
