About the Author

Samuel Osherson, Ph.D., is a practicing psychotherapist on the faculty of Harvard Medical School. He wrote in the Preface to this 1986 book, “[after] my first direct encounters as an adult with the reality of loss and my human helplessness in the face of it…Writing has always been the way I’ve tried to sort things out… so it’s not surprising that I started keeping a journal… This book really began with that journal… At first I wrote mainly about the present… but then came memories and feelings about the past… When my difficult and conflicted relationship with my father came into focus, I realized that I had found the man I had been searching for, the father who, more by his absence than his presence, was the key to the sense of emptiness and vulnerability in my life… During this time I had the opportunity to hear about the lives of many other men. I was directing a longitudinal study of a large number of Harvard men… My research gave me the opportunity to talk in a relaxed, unhurried manner with … men from around the country… From these talks I began to see how profound and painful were the consequences of the predictable dislocation between fathers and sons… Many of the male-female skirmishes of our times are rooted in the hidden, ongoing struggles sons have with their fathers… So I set out to write a book about men’s unfinished business with their fathers.”

In the Introduction, he explains, “In this book I shall explore how men’s early and ongoing relationships with their fathers shape the intimacy and work dilemmas men coming of age today face. My focus is on the emotional vulnerabilities of normal adult men as we struggle with the demands of work and family in our lives. What I hope to show is that to understand men’s feelings about love and work we need to understand our unfinished business with our fathers… I also draw on other research… plus my clinical experience in counseling men of differing ages and circumstances.” (Pg. 4) Later, he adds, “The interviews I have had with men in their thirties and forties convince me that the psychological or physical absence of fathers from their families is one of the great underestimated tragedies of our times.” (Pg. 6)

He says, “The end result of the boy’s separation-individuation struggle is that men carry around as adults a burden of vulnerability, dependency, or emptiness within themselves, still grieving… When men are put in touch with this pain today, they will respond ambivalently: with rage or shame, attempting to prove their independence, as well as with curiosity and a desire to heal the wound they feel.” (Pg. 10)

He suggests, “It is possible to heal the wounded father within. Men are not passive victims; much of our [activity]… is actually an attempt to heal the wound within ourselves, so that we can become more confident and nurturing as men… Healing the wounded father within is a psychological and social process that unfolds over time and involves exploring a new sense of self, and understanding the complex crosscurrents within our families which affected us as we grew up.” (Pg. 16)

He states, “The wounded father is the internal sense of masculinity that man carry around with them. It is an inner image of father that we experience as judgmental or angry or, depending on our relationship with father, as needy and vulnerable. When a man says he can’t love his children because he wasn’t loved well enough, it is the wounded father he is struggling with… The internalized, wounded father is rooted in the son’s experience of the father, a composite of fantasy and reality, not always corresponding to the reality of what father was really like or exactly what went on within the family. “ (Pg. 27-28)

He observes, “I have the impression that today the wish for forgiveness and reconciliation with father often goes unmet… The rites of passage common to men in adolescence and young adulthood today involve joining such institutions as the army, football teams, medical schools, and large corporations. Those institutions play upon the young man’s wish for an idealized father to love him, offering an exaggeratedly masculine way to live up and be a good son.” (Pg. 46)

He points out, “A greatly overlooked aspect of men’s psyche is their fear of doing harm to or being hurt by those they love. Many men I’ve worked with and talked to carry with them an unexamined feeling, often never verbalized or acknowledged, that they are destructive or violent. A key issue for men in their thirties and forties is what to do with the unconscious rage dredged up by the experiences they are having in the family.” (Pg. 145)

In the chapter on fatherhood, he comments, “The man may wonder if he will become a father for whom the provider identity absorbs all… Yet provider anxiety may have less to do with money than with intimacy. Among many men the fear … is also fear of losing intimacy and family in the process of becoming the traditional father… There is a reality behind that concern. Since we lack images of a truly participatory, emotionally involved father, many men will confront internal and social expectations to the effect that their main and primary task is to get out there and protect and provide for the family… We become fathers not just to our children, not just in the eyes of the outside world, but in the eyes of our wives as well.” (Pg. 190)

He asks, “What does it mean for sons to heal the wounded father, our internal image of father as wounded or angry, which lies at the core of our own sense of masculinity? Healing the wounded father means ‘detoxifying’ that image so that it is no longer dominated by the resentment, sorrow and sense of loss or absence that restrict our own identities as men… We are speaking here of a process of grieving… In trying to understand our fathers, we confront the depths of our neediness and that of our fathers.” (Pg. 206)

He notes, “By the time many men try to work it out with their fathers… they don’t get to work it out because the roles are almost reversed; father may be ill, less productive, less energetic… Healing the wounded father becomes more complex when a father is dead, emotionally inaccessible, or physically unavailable. In such cases one is deprived of the actual emotional healing that comes from reaching common ground with one’s father, hearing and seeing a new bond forged between the generations. And the son is deprived too of feeling that he has been able to give to his father, helping to heal his father’s emotional wounds.” (Pg. 224-225)

He concludes, “At bottom, healing the wounded father is a process of untangling the myths and fantasies sons learn growing up about self, mother, and father, which we act out every day with bosses, wives, and children. It means constructing a satisfying sense of manhood both from our opportunities in a time of changing sex-roles and by ‘diving into the wreck of the past and retrieving a firm, sturdy appreciation of the heroism and failure in our fathers’ lives… Every man need to identify the good in his father, to feel how we are like them, as well as the ways we are different from them. From that, I believe, comes a fuller, trustworthy sense of masculinity, a way of caring and nurturing, of being strong without being destructive.” (Pg. 229)

Engineering design is the set of activities that lead to the manufacture of exciting new products such as aircraft, automobiles, home appliances, and hand tools as well as the construction of new facilities such as refineries, steel mills, and food processing plants. It is a pursuit that challenges our analytical abilities and our knowledge of mathematics, the sciences, and manufacturing to find solutions that work better, last longer, and are easy to maintain or repair. Just as important, however, is that engineering design is fulfilling and personally satisfying in that we can use our creative abilities to develop ideas, that they become real, and that they meet the needs of our fellow human beings.

This text is for students at the undergraduate or first-year graduate level. It is for design and nondesign faculty who wish to learn more about modern design concepts and methods. It is for practicing engineers who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills. The book is not a comprehensive, intellectual report of engineering design research. Rather, the text is a practical, down-to-earth presentation of engineering design integrating topics about the business of manufacturing. It draws upon the author's engineering and managerial experiences at organizations such as General Electric, Fisher Price Toys, Wurlitzer, and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. Preliminary versions of the text have been successful in semester-long design courses that include team-based design projects.

This book brings together the best design methods and practices in a consistent, clear, and orderly presentation. Readers are introduced to concepts and methods developed by the best engineering design authors in the world including Dixon and Poli, Dieter, Otto and Wood, Pahl and Beitz, and Ullman. Using a "just-in-time" philosophy of learning, topics are presented in an orderly fashion, progressively building design methods and terminology. The topics are presented and used, rather than stored away for use at a later date. Exercises at the end of each chapter use the knowledge and methods presented. Mary different examples are presented to highlight the similarities and differences of various design methods. An extensive summary of key terms is included in a glossary to delineate the important subtleties that are embodied in design and manufacturing terminology. In addition, self-quiz exercises are included at the end of each chapter for immediate reinforcement of the reader's understanding.

A number of other important features are included. Concurrent engineering and teamwork, particularly the role of communication and project management, is emphasized throughout the text. The interdependence of product function, materials, and manufacturing processes is examined with respect to the product realization process in separate chapters on materials and process selection. The voice of the customer is interwoven in chapters on design problem formulation and includes using customer satisfaction measures to evaluate design alternatives. The subject of human factors is presented along with tables and illustrations in such detail so as to provide the reader with the necessary tools for preparing preliminary designs that incorporate human abilities and limitations. Instructors will find a variety of materials on the accompanying Instructor's CD ROM, including PowerPoint@ slides, solutions to exercises, syllabi suggestions, design project write-ups, and electronic files of key figures from the text. The ONLY worthwhile Warcraft manga! Incredible!

Firstly, a brief summary of Warcraft: Death Knight-

Death Knight follows the story of Thassarian, beginning from his days as a young man in Lordaeron's army. Through a combination of flash-backs and linear storytelling, it shows the events leading from the fall of Lordaeron, the redemption of the Death Knights, to Thassarian's journey to seek revenge upon the Lich King.

Now, let me validate myself by saying I am both a longtime manga fan, Warcraft player, and bookaholic. I've flipped through every Warcraft comic or manga in print, and so far there are very, very few I felt worth the money. This one, however, was simply incredible.

There are a few things to keep in mind, however.

Firstly, this is a manga...a concrete story trying to do the impossible: capture the essence of a constantly evolving game. Anytime a book/comic attempts to do this, with ANY series, there will be obsessed fans who are disappointed. This book, like any RPG/MMORG novel, must be read with that understanding. In that light, I don't think anyone could have done a better job than Rocio Zucchi and Dan Jolley!

The Art: I was a little skeptical at first, as I am not used to seeing sword-and-sorcery stories in manga form. However, I quickly got over that and came to really appreciate the style and representation of the characters. Rocio Zucchi does a fantastic job of portraying the characters' personalities, and especially in contrasting the details between Thassarian as a human vs. Death Knight. Her style is very emotive, which blends well with Dan Jolley's storytelling. The Blood/High Elves especially were beautifully done (unlike in a few other Warcraft manga that I shall leave unnamed...). The detail, too, is absolutely staggering. The scene in which Arthas descends upon Lordaeron with the Scourge army has so much detail that you have to really study it to see everything that is there. Nothing is skimped. I truly look forward to seeing her work on Warcraft: Shaman!

The story: The story, too, was very well done. It was fantastic to see not only Thassarian's backstory, but Koltira Deathweaver's as well (two of my favorite characters!). It is also refreshing to have Lerrysa given a bit of story, as in the game she just pops up as a damsel in distress. Here, at least, she's given a chance to show she's more than a plot device. Thankfully very little is repeated from the game, but rather the story behind events and characters is fleshed out. My only regrets are that neither Kael'thas or Illidan make an appearance, and Koltira's screen-time is limited, but considering the length limitations of manga format it is understandable.

In short, this is a MUST HAVE for any fan of the lore of Warcraft. Death Knight fans especially will enjoy this book, though any Warcraft player should definitely pick up a copy. It gives much-needed back story and character development to certain elements of the game, and truly makes an altogether much more enjoyable experience.

Good DK Story

I bought this because I play a Blood Elf Death Knight in WoW (yeah, yeah, one of the most overplayed Race/Class combos). It was a fun read, nice to see a story involving your own class. The story is nothing spectacular, but it involves and gives some more back story to the two Death Knights that the Tier 9 armor is named after, Thassarian and Koltira. The art is nice, is quite true to the game. It also recaps the DK starting zone story, as well as an alliance chain quest from Borean Tundra. This may or may not put someone who has already done them off.

Either way, for a DK player who is interested in the Lore, it's a fun read. I'm not sure I'd pick up the upcoming mangas for classes I don't play, though.

Excellent story and art. A great start for a new series.

I just finished reading "World of Warcraft: Death Knight" and I was very impressed by it. I haven't played WoW in a couple of years now, due to money and time restraints, but I still love the Warcraft universe so I try to keep up with the lore and what's going on in it. Even though, I have not played the newest expansion of the game, and really know nothing of the Death Knights, I picked up on the story right away. The writing was top notch and kept me interested all the way through. Dan Jolley did a great job with the narrative and I look forward to reading more from him. I'm also happy to report that not only did it have a great story and good writing, but the artwork by Rocio Zucchi was top notch as well. In manga and comics the art is very important to me, and she did an excellent job of bringing Jolley's story to life. I can't wait to see what these two do for Volume 2 and beyond. If you are a WoW fanboy/girl or just like fantasy stories in general I'd recommend this one to you. It's a good read.

Around 300 A.D. European patterns of marriage and kinship were turned on their head. What had previously been the norm - marriage to close kin - became the new taboo. The same applied to adoption, the obligation of a man to marry his brother's widow and a number of other central practices. With these changes Christian Europe broke radically from its own past and established practices which diverged markedly from those of the Middle East, North Africa and Asia. In this highly original and far-reaching work Jack Goody argues that from the fourth century there developed in the northern Mediterranean a distinctive but not undifferentiated kinship system, whose growth can be attributed to the role of the Church in acquiring property formerly held by domestic groups. He suggests that the early Church, faced with the need to provide for people who had left their kin to devote themselves to the life of the Church, regulated the rules of marriage so that wealth could be channelled away from the family and into the Church. Thus the Church became an 'interitor', acquiring vast tracts of property through the alienation of familial rights. At the same time, the structure of domestic life was changed dramatically, the Church placing more emphasis on individual wishes, on conjugality, and on spiritual rather than natural kinship. Tracing the consequences of this change through to the present day, Jack Goody challenges some fundamental assumptions about the making of western society, and provides an alternative focus for future study of the European family, kinship structures and marriage patterns. The questions he raises will provoke much interest and discussion amongst anthropologists, sociologists and historians.

About the Author
Jack Goody is Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St John's College. Recently knighted by Her Majesty The Queen for services to anthropology, Professor Goody has researched and taught all over the world, is a Fellow of the British Academy and in 1980 was made a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2004 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and he was elected Commandeur des Arts et Lettres in 2006.

A real eye-opener!

Why did Europe in particular develop the prohibitions against marry close kin that are still with us today? Why are a deceased spouse's siblings, the spouses of deceased siblings, various degrees of cousins, and god-children forbidden from being considered eligible marriage partners? The ancient Israelites, Greeks, and Romans had no such prohibitions. The Germanic peoples who settled northern Europe after the Roman Empire fell in the West did not carry these taboos with them. Where did they come from?
This book argues that Fourth Century Christianity invented these marriage prohibitions which had previously not existed in either Biblical or Roman civil law traditions. The effect, if not the actual purpose, of these prohibitions was to limit the number of inheritance strategies available to property owners. By narrowing the options for trans-generational wealth transfers (including the virtual disappearance of civil adoption), the developing Church became the beneficiary of an increasingly large number of heirless people.
The wealth of the Church expanded to such a point that the lay authorities had to legislate against various accumulation strategies used by the Church - culminating ultimately with the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII.
The premise is a fascinating one and does a reasonable job of explaining why we have the marriage prohibitions which are with us today. The first few chapters are a bit of a tough read as they set the anthropological ground work of the study. However, the subsequent chapters are a historians delight. Truly an innovative work.

Goody, Goody.

I'm not going to go into much detail in this, but I have to say as a graduate student, I'm tired of a lot of the crap that Jack Goody gets. He brings an anthropological approach and methodology to a topic that has for far too often been confined to history. He has excellent quantitative arguments, and provides helpful, if sometimes confusing, figures such as pedigrees to illustrate his points throughout the text. Even if you don't buy Goody's arguments, it's a good idea to read this if you're a medievalist (which Goody isn't, by the way). Most historians could do with more exposure to anthropological methodologies. The sheer amount of discussion this text has generated speaks to its importance. Anyone interested in the history of European matrimonial customs must read this as a formative text.
